Erin and Ethan's Swaziland Book Drive

10/10/2015 to 03/15/2016
San Diego CA

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

My name is Erin, I'm a junior at Canyon Crest Academy. Together with my brother Ethan, a freshman at Canyon Crest, we have created an African Library book club at our school. This is my third library and I plan on continuing each year!

We want to start a library in Africa because...

We both love reading and think that it's terrible that other people in the world who want to further their education don't have access to the books that they need. Many people take for granted their literacy and the power that comes with it. Being able to read empowers and helps us in every aspect of our lives, and we'd like to share this power with the rest of the world.

About our African Partners...

We are sending books to create a library in Mlidzini High School located in a remote part of Swaziland. Literacy levels are generally not as high as they are here, and we are grateful to be able to help!

Please contribute these kinds of books...

We need to collect 1000 SOFT cover chapter books for 4th to 8th grade reading level. They need to be in good condition. Not only chapter books are required but also 4-8th grade text books including Math, English, Science, and geography. As well as dictionaries, atlases and encyclopedias.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

A drop off box is located at Canyon Crest Academy in the counselors office and at Center for Martial Arts in Encinitas. You can also email us at and we will be happy to pick up the books from your home.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

We need to raise $500.00 for shipping the books to Africa. $250.00 to send the books from San Diego to a warehouse in New Orleans and then an additional $250.00 to send them from New Orleans to Africa. Contact us at if you are able to support us with our shipping funds.

Here are some ways that you can help...

Some ways that you can help are to donate soft-cover, gently used books and to donate money to help pay for the shipping costs to get our books to their new library. Most importantly, you can spread the word and let other people know about our cause and how to help.
