African Library Project

The Condodina Sisters' Library Project for Ghana

12/28/2015 to 04/20/2016
Westfield NJ

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

My name is Cara Condodina and I am 15 years old and a sophomore at Mount Saint Mary Academy in New Jersey. My older sister, Annie, and my younger sister, Lily, are also helping me with this project. Annie is a senior in high school and Lily is in eighth grade. All three of us love to read and always talk about books we love or what book we are going to read next. We want people all over the world to be able to discover the same love for reading as we have!

We want to start a library in Africa because...

When I found out that so many children in Africa don't have access to books like we do, I realized that reading is something that many people in America take for granted, my sisters and I included. What a luxury it is to have access to public and school libraries and how fortunate are we that we have been privileged enough take advantage of them. These books have the ability to change the lives of children living in Africa. The simple act of giving a book has the power to increase literacy, bring joy, and empower a child. Our goal for starting a library in Africa is to share the gifts that reading has given us.

About our African Partners...

Our books are being sent to Ghana to create a school library at Moving Star School. The books that you help us collect will serve 580 students, be read by children at this school and help to increase literacy in Ghana.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

Our goal is to collect 1,000 preschool through 6th grade level books. This can include (but is not limited to) basic reading books, math and science books, and dictionaries too. We accept new or gently-used books. If you are donating books that are used, please make sure that they are in good condition.

Please take into consideration that these books are for children living in Africa. PLEASE DO YOUR BEST TO NOT DONATE THE FOLLOWING:
-Books with lots of slang
-Books for very young children that have many references to appliances and electronic gadgets
-Adult paperback romance novels
-Books about United States history or government (but DO SEND books about African-Americans)
-Books about North American or religious holidays (Easter, Halloween, Christmas, 4th of July, Thanksgiving, April Fools Day, Valentine’s Day, Chanukah, etc.)
-Books that evangelize or promote a particular religion

In addition, donations of educational games, puzzles, and posters, as well as teaching resources would be greatly appreciated and could help make our library even better! Do not hesitate to donate anything that you think would be beneficial to the library!
