Heartsong Brain Break Yoga for Kids

11/04/2015 to 03/16/2016
East Longmeadow MA

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

We are the kids of Brain Break Yoga at Heartsong Yoga in East Longmeadow, Massachusetts. We are yoga kids trying to bring more peace, love and compassion into the world. We come together on a weekly basis to practice yoga and learn principles that help us be the best individuals we can be. In our effort to give back (Seva), we are collecting books for children in Ghana.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

We feel so fortunate to have access to books through our local and school libraries and want to share our love of books and reading with those that may not be as fortunate as we are. We also want to actively participate in the yoga principle of Seva (selfless service to others).

About our African Partners...

The Michael Lapsley Foundation (MLF) is a registered Non-Governmental Organization or NGO (nonprofit) that was established in March 2004. MLF was named after a prominent South African anti-apartheid activist, Father Michael Lapsley. Father Lapsley lost both hands and an eye from a letter bomb and the Foundation was named to honor his contributions to the black Africa community during and after the apartheid regime in South Africa. Their mission is “to improve the quality of life of the underprivileged by addressing their educational and social development needs through the provision of resources, information and training” and is located in Accra, the capital of Ghana.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

Please donate gently loved children's books for children preschool aged through 8th grade. Please be mindful that the culture in Ghana is different than here in the U.S. and they may be unfamiliar with books geared towards specific American holidays such as Easter and Halloween.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

Please drop off book donations at Heartsong Yoga or call Heather for a large donation to be picked up.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

We will be holding a donation-based community fundraising class on March 12, 2016 at Heartsong Yoga from 1:00-2:00 p.m. to help raise funds to ship our books to Ghana. Please check the Heartsong website for additional details!

Here are some ways that you can help...

We are in need of not only gently loved books but also donations. Our books must be shipped to a warehouse in New Orleans and then put on a cargo ship in a shipping container. From there our books will travel overseas to be placed on a train and then trucks to be delivered to the children in the Ghanaian community.

Families and Kids of all ages welcome! $10 suggested donation

The Brain Break Yoga Kids at Heartsong Yoga Center began a service project with the African Library Project in December 2015 as a part of their learning about yoga and yoga principles. The children have a goal of collecting 1000 books and $500 to ship the books to start a primary community library in Ghana as part of the African Library Project. The Brain Break Kids are holding a donation-based benefit yoga class at Heartsong Yoga Center on Saturday, March 12, 2016 from 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. They are working hard to share the gift of books with children like them who do not have enough books.

Spread the word!

Thank you to all the parents of Brain Break Yoga that have and continue to support this seva project in all ways.
A special thanks to Sheila Magalhaes, Owner of Heartsong Yoga for allowing us to involve the Heartsong Yoga community in our efforts.
