The Essex and Chenard African Library Project

02/22/2016 to 03/11/2016
Norfolk MA

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

Carrie, Chris, Natalie, and Claire. We heard about the African Library Project from a friend, and it appealed to us not only because of our appreciation for books and libraries. We already completed a book drive for Botswana, a country close to our hearts, and felt such satisfaction that we wanted to help more. Carrie visited Swaziland on a trip in 2000, and it was a beautiful country filled with kind people helping 2 graduate students traveling alone.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

every child deserves the opportunity to have books to read. Reading opens minds and hearts and allows for so many new thoughts and opportunities.

We have books to share, energy to organize a book drive, and friends to help us accomplish our goals. Starting another library seems like such a simple way to share the wonder and power of reading.

About our African Partners...

The books we collect are heading to a primary school in Swaziland, a small country within South Africa. We aren't sure of the exact school yet, but will update the page when we know.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

We are collecting new and gently used books for pre-school to 4th grade reading level, along with teacher resource materials such as books, lesson plans, posters and games aimed at improving teaching. Our goal is 1000 books (or more!) in the next 2 weeks.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

Please contact Carrie Essex to donate books anytime before March 10. We need to sort and pack the books to mail by March 13.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

The international shipping of the books costs at least $250, and the domestic about $250 in addition. This is where we need the most help with this book drive. Our previous book collection was extremely successful, allowing us to be near completion with this library, but we need to start collecting for shipping again. If you would like to donate online toward the international shipping, our code on the ALP website is SW9-36. Donations for domestic shipping can be directly to Carrie or Chris.
