African Library Project

Sheila, Sarah, and David Irungu's African Book Drive

10/16/2015 to 12/01/2015
Alameda CA

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

We are three siblings who love to read and live in sunny California. Sheila Irungu. I am a 16 year old Junior at Alameda High School. I believe that reading is a necessity and books should be accessible to children all over the world. Sarah Irungu. I am 12 years old and I'm in 7th grade. I also really enjoy reading and learning new things from books. David Irungu. I am in 1st grade and I'm 7 years old. I like helping other kids and I hope they like the books we give them. Our mom always talks about giving back. She stumbled upon the African Library Project, and when she showed us the website, we were all in.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

We would like to share our love for reading to underprivileged children who do not have access to a library.

About our African Partners...

We are very excited to start a library in Botswana at Mabesekwa primary (Elementary) school! This school is located in the Central North district and currently has 479 students and 16 teachers.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

We are collecting gently used books for pre-school to 4th grade reading level and also gently used educational games and puzzles. We encourage you to donate books, as the children in Botswana aren't as privileged as us and don't have the opportunity to read books for their enjoyment. These kids have very few books and really enjoy the books donated. Our parents were raised in a place similar to Botswana where they only had a few books in their schools. They said that they had to share one book among all of the children in the classroom. We are very fortunate that we have such opportunities and we would really love to give back to the not-so fortunate. We were hoping that you would be willing to help us achieve this. :)

Here's how you can contribute your books...

Our book drive ends on the 1st of December, so be sure to get your book donations before then, because we will be shipping them by Dec 10th, meaning that they need to be sorted and packed in boxes in advance. Please e-mail

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

Our parents have agreed to fund the shipping. We have to do house chores to earn the money. We will be having a squeaky clean house!!

Here are some ways that you can help...

We would greatly appreciate the donation of books (So would the kids in Botswana!) and donations of money to help us reach the $500 we need in order to build the library. Thank you to all of the kindhearted people who have already donated books. Another very useful way you can help is to spread the word! Tell other relatives, co-workers, neighbors, ect. about our project so that hopefully they will be as kind as you have been and donate.
