BASIS Chandler Book Drive

04/13/2015 to 05/01/2015
Chandler AZ

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

The BASIS Chandler NHS chapter is hosting the book drive for the African Library Project.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

Most teachers in rural Africa only have a handful of books. Most of what they teach is from what they can remember. It's a shame that here in America books are something we take for granted. Something we often overlook, and don't really appreciate fully. Yet, in places such as Africa, books are not an everyday good for people. Without books how are kids supposed to learn? Kids in first world countries are surrounded by books and libraries and opportunities to read and expand their knowledge. These same opportunities just don't exist in places like South Africa. Our ultimate goal for this book drive is to give as many kids as we can a fair opportunity to learn, and make a difference in the world they're living in.

About our African Partners...

Our books will be going to Linge Primary School in Nyanga, Cape Town, South Africa. Nyanga is one of the oldest black townships in South Africa and is rich in history. However it has one of the highest crime rates of any city in the entire WORLD. Unemployment is high, and it is one of the poorest parts of Cape Town. The people at Linge Primary School strive to make a difference in the kids' lives by giving them a proper education. However, how is this possible, when they are lacking the most simple of resources? That's where we come in. The goal of our book drive is to collect 1,000 books, so we can start a library at Linge Primary School. We want to give this generation of kids in Nyanga a fair opportunity to make a difference in this world. To one day grow up and be the next generation of doctors, lawyers, and businessmen.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

We would like preschool to 8th grade reading level books, with an emphasis on preschool to 4th grading reading levels. We would mainly like any types of fiction books. Chapter books such as Magic Treehouse Series, Charlotte's Web, Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, and Maze Runner are all great examples of chapter books that we're looking for. Additionally Baby Board books, children's picture books, and BIG books are all fitting books for the younger kids. Some of the specific books that the school requested for were math books, dictionaries, social science books, books on ethics, books on life-orientation, creative arts books, geography books, and technology books.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

Donate your books to your first hour classroom in the designated boxes. The boxes are clearly marked and say "place books in here" and "book drive" on them. The drive runs from April 13, 2015 through April 27, 2015.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

The profit made from the BASIS Chandler Movie Night will directly go to covering the costs of shipping these books. So please come on out to the movie night on April 25th.

Here are some ways that you can help...

You can donate books, and come to our Movie Night on April 25th to help us reach our goal of 1,000 books and $500.

Tips for Other Book Drive Organizers

Make sure you are organized. If you lose track of dates, you will really be in a world of hurt. Advertising is key! Without advertising that exhorts people to donate books or funds, your book drive will not be successful. The people at the African Library Project are very helpful, so feel free to send them an e-mail with any questions.
