Books for Malawi

02/10/2015 to 06/03/2015
Harrisburg PA

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

Hello! My name is Zachary Bailey and a resident of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. I recently graduated from the University of Pittsburgh and through incessant reflection, I have begun to appreciate the wondrous opportunity that was conferred on me through the channels of education. Reading is my quintessential pastime (a borderline bibliomaniac) and synonymous with Thomas Jefferson, "I cannot live without books." The African Library Project organization has granted me an indelible opportunity to donate to the dedicated youth in Malawi and embolden their interests in education.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

Existential reflection over the past several months has left me feeling powerless and feeble, two qualities I do not necessarily support. I recently graduated from the University of Pittsburgh (a transcendent experience socially and educationally), immigrated back to Harrisburg to job hunt, and was surrounded by caring family and friends. Yet, I felt vapid, locked in a linear path, so I decided to research humanitarian drives after discovering the works of Horace Mann (I highly recommend his oeuvre). During the course of my journey, an epiphany smote me so vividly, so clear. What was the underlying skill that had enabled it all, unleashed the creativity, shattered the manacles of ignorance?-Books. Urgently, with a prodigious pace, I researched literacy initiatives, and gratefully decided on the African Library Project. This organization will vouchsafe me the tools and instruments to better the educational youth of Malawi, not for my own personal satisfaction, but for the universal right of education that every human on our habitable planet deserves. I am thoroughly convinced that these children will empower themselves to attain successes.

About our African Partners...

Since commencement has just been authorized, the only information I am abreast of is that Malawi will be the receiving country and the library will be a Community Library based at a Secondary School.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

About 1/3 of the books (roughly 330 books) should be at U.S. preschool-4th grade and 2/3 (670 books) at the U.S. 4th grade-8th grade books.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

The primary drop-off location will be my residence at 4015 North 2nd Street, Harrisburg, PA 17110. If this is not tenable, then please feel no hesitation to call or text me (717-433-4216) and we can arrange a different plan of action. Remember, the end date of the initiative is June 3!!! Additionally, I hope to place a book drive container in Susquehanna Township High School and the Dauphin County Library.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

In order to defray the cost of shipping, I have developed several fundraising initiatives to raise the required $500-$600. Grassroots fundraising will be primary-going door to door, soliciting donations, as well as a packet with supplementary materials on the book drive. Second, I will be in communication with Susquehanna Township High School to establish a book drive and fundraiser there, as well as at the Dauphin County Library.

Here are some ways that you can help...

Donated books and money are not the only means of contribution. Simply disseminating the book drive or placing flyers in schools or conversing with friends, family, neighbors about the initiative is spectacularly effective and appreciated.

This is the initial day of the drive, so the results are feeble thus far, but in time, I hope the totals for books and fundraising begins to rise!

Through your cooperation, we can empower Malawi Youth

I want to express my thanks and add that I am indebted to everyone who helps in this initiative. I cannot possibly do this alone and without the assistance of every contributor, this drive would not be successful.
