University of Louisville Engage Lead Serve Board Youth Development

02/02/2015 to 03/31/2015
Louisville KY

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

This book drive is being put together by the Engage Lead Serve Board Youth Development committee at University of Louisville. The youth development committee engages students on campus to get involved with the youth in our community and brings events pertaining to youth on campus.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

Millions of children attend school globally, but millions remain illiterate. This is because libraries are rare in places like Africa. With no books it is impossible to practice literacy which could lead a child or family out of poverty.

About our African Partners...

Our Africa Partner is the Kenten Primary School in Ghana. New Kenten is a suburb of Techiman Municipal with a population of about 9,000. The citizens are mainly farmers and traders. Most pupils spend their lives by attending school in the morning (it's closed in the afternoon). Most of the pupils support their parents and guardians by helping them in their house chores and farming activities.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

Books at U.S. pre-school to 4th grade reading level, educational games, puzzles, teacher supplies, and flash cards.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

There will be bins located around University of Louisville's campus specifically in the Student Involvement Office. You can also get in touch with the director and associated director of youth development and they will be more than happy to meet up with you to collect your donation.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

To raise funds for the shipping of the books we plan to market our African Library Project donation page on social media and events on campus. Our budget does not cover the $500 required so we will need help with more funding for shipping.

Here are some ways that you can help...

You can help build up a library in Ghana by donating books, donating money, asking others to help with the cause, donate teacher supplies, or send a note of encouragement to a library or student.
