Firestone High School National Honor Society's African Library Project

11/01/2014 to 03/15/2015
Akron OH

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

Firestone is an inner city high school in Akron, Ohio. It is a visual and performing school, with engineering and International Baccalaureate programs. National Honor Society (NHS) is a group of students who focus on scholarship, leadership, service, and character. We believe that this project will impact many children for the rest of their life.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

We want to help communities grow in knowledge. We want to enable kids to learn because it will help them in the future. Reading is important to cultural and educational development. Firestone has over 1000 students, which will make this project super fun and rewarding.

About our African Partners...

Our African Library partner in Swaziland is Ekuvinjelweni High School Library. We are the only book drive matched with this school. This area in Africa is rural and most people live in poverty due to the AIDS pandemic. Many of the students are orphans because of this.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

We are collecting books for a secondary school library, which includes 4th to 8th grade readers. They would also like up to date encyclopedias, atlases, dictionaries, teacher's resource books for school libraries, and fun novels to read.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

We need to collect and pack 1000 books. Bring them to Firestone High School. The address is 333 Rampart Avenue, Akron, Ohio 44313. We are starting on November 1st and we need to have them shipped by March 15th. If you have any questions, please email one of the contacts listed below.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

Our school has to raise $500 in order to ship the books to Africa. We were thinking about asking to put change buckets in stores. Also, we are planning on doing a bake sale and a candy sale. Again, if you have any questions, email one of the listed contacts.

Here are some ways that you can help...

Just help us get the word out! Tell your family and friends about our project. Bring used books and spare change to Firestone.
