African Library Project

Somerville-Boston Book Drive

9/1/14 to 11/30/14
Somerville MA

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

Madeleine and Mark are working to start a primary school library in Botswana! Leading the charge are Sophie, Lila, Isobel, and Gio--our 1st and 4th graders--who have been raising money, selling lemonade, and collecting books.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

Everyone deserves a basic education to become greater than themselves.
We are blessed with friends and neighbors with school-aged children who have "grown out" of home libraries of gently used books.
Books inspire our hearts, teach us new skills, and build esteem.

About our African Partners...

Our efforts will start a library at the St. Augustine Primary School located in the Serowe North district of Botswana, currently with 14 teachers and 426 students.
We are the only book drive matched with this school!

Please contribute these kinds of books...

Our goal for this library is to collect 1,000+ gently used books: preschool- 4th grade books. If possible, please include teacher resource materials for this school.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

We currently have collection boxes located at the Brown School.
Other sites will be available soon.
Additionally, you may contact us directly to coordinate a pickup/drop off.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

The other part of our goal is to raise $500 for shipping. We need your help to purchase packing materials and cover shipping costs to transport the books to the overall African Library Project warehouse in New Orleans (about $250).
Additionally, we need your help transporting the shipping container to Africa (about another $250).
