Molly Searcy's Bat Mitzvah Project: Botswana School Library, One Book, One Smile

09/01/2014 to 04/24/2015
Salem OR

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

My name is Molly Searcy and I am collecting books for a school in Botswana to help build their library. I am doing this in preparation for my Bat Mitzvah in April. A Bat Mitzvah is becoming a daughter of the commandment. Under Jewish law, when a girl has reached the age of 12, they are allowed to observe the commandments. After a Bat Mitzvah has taken place, the person is now allowed to study Judaism's beliefs and practices.

I have a passion for dancing. I am a member of the City Dance Theatre Performing Company. I try to work hard, dedicate myself to dancing, and be supportive of my fellow dancers. I hope to carry this over in my book drive so the kids of Botswana feel the same about books as I do about dance.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

One of the parts of a Bat Mitzvah is completing a charitable service project. In my case, I want to help set up a library in Africa. Across Africa many children do not have access to good books and libraries. The African Library Project changes that. I am working with the African Library Project to bring the joy of reading to primary children in Botswana

Please contribute these kinds of books...

Since I am supporting a primary school in Botswana, I am in need of books at a pre-school to 4th grade reading level (based on US standards).

Here's how you can contribute your books...

If you live locally in the Salem area, you are welcome to let me know and I will gladly come pick up any books you might have. Or you can drop them off at my school, Crossler.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

Another important part of this drive is to raise $600 to ship the books. If you can donate just $2.00, I would only need 300 people to donate. You may send checks to Molly Searcy, 5144 Klamath Ct SE., Salem, OR 97306 or easily donate on PayPal. Please log into PayPal and send your donation to Or you may donate directly to this link: Any support is much appreciated :)
