We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

We are a group of friends dedicated to promoting literacy, knowing that it will make our world a better place. Many of us are healthcare workers, teachers, and parents. We understand the impact that literacy and knowledge have on global issues and peace. This is our second book drive. Our first book drive was such a success that we decided to do another.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

Events such as the kidnapping of Nigerian school girls, and the assassination attempt on Malala Yousafzai, draw attention to the fear that oppressors have of literacy and knowledge. We must not allow them to stamp out the desire or ability of children and adults throughout the world to learn and have the ability to read. As world citizens, we must look beyond our own zip codes and make efforts to improve things in distant lands knowing that we are all connected.

About our African Partners...

We will be sending a library to the country of Botswana. Our library will provide books for a primary library for people to read at a preschool-4th grade level. They ask that donated books do not contain religious, political, or holiday themes that are specific another country. It is fine to include books about famous African Americans.I will update this page when I have more information about the school.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

For a primary library that will have books ranging from pre-school to 4th grade reading levels. I don't have any special requests from our African partner yet, but I will post them as they become available.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

Start gathering gently used books now & as we progress, we will decide how & where we will get them together for packing and shipping. Get your kids, classmates, friends, spouses, co-workers, and everyone else involved! Send me pictures of their work and I'll post them on our page.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

You may collect donations for shipping from those who would like to help but do not have books to donate. The shipping costs are approximately $500.00 ($250.00 for domestic shipping to New Orleans and $250.00 for shipping on the container ship to Botswana)

Also, if someone would like to help by donating shipping supplies that is also great. We had a lot of donated boxes last time, but ultimately, things were much easier when we used standard size boxes for several reasons. Also, Home Depot has these great packing peanuts that are made of recycled paper/cardboard and it felt good knowing that we wouldn't be sending styrofoam to Africa. We have lots of packing tape left from the last book drive.

Last time, we set up a "You Caring" account/donation page and that is something we will do (if we need to) closer to our deadline. I'd like to avoid that this time, if possible. Donations for international shipping can be made directly to African Library Project (ALP) using the code B10-03. If you do this or your friends would like to do this, please check with me first. These donations can only be applied to INTERNATIONAL shipping and they are not able to process refunds if we over pay. I will keep track of any donations made directly to ALP as long as I know about them. Donations made to ALP over $25.00 are tax deductible and they will provide a tax receipt.

Here are some ways that you can help...

If anyone has specific fundraising ideas or experience please share your ideas. This is a big task, but I know that we can do this!!!! If anyone is interested in being a contact person on the "west side" and helping me keep this organized and afloat, please let me know! I was thrilled to see how many people showed a genuine interest right away. If by some chance we surpass our goals, Wouldn't it be great to fund THREE libraries???? :)

Progress Report

Our Goal 1000 books $500 fundraising
Results so far
(updated: November 15, 2015)
1000+ books $500.00+ fundraising

If we are fortunate enough to raise funds in excess of our $500.00 goal, we will use them to purchase additional library books to help us reach our goal of 1,000 books. I changed our book total to reflect that this library is different than the first one we donated because this one is preschool through 4th grade and our first one was through 8th grade.

We are packing and shipping this week! :)

Thank you to all of the Facebook Friends, neighbors, and family members who have already come forward to help with this very worthwhile endeavor.

Tips for Other Book Drive Organizers

Get a little more money than suggested to cover any other costs (like packing fillers, tape, and things like that in case you need more)
