African Library Project

The Taylor Pitman Family African Library Project

09/30/2019 to 10/28/2019
Campbell CA

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

Leander, London and my immediate family are excited to be embarking on this African Library Project. As some of you already know, Leander was born in Africa. His mother was a missionary there for many years providing services for people. We would like to honor her memory by doing this book drive and sharing the gift of reading with children who are London's age up through 4th grade.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

We are excited to be able to share books with other children. Reading has been a big part of our routine with London since she was a couple of weeks old and we can see the difference! Being able to increase literacy and empower other young children in a country that has significant meaning to our family is priceless. These books will go to a primary library in Uganda. While Leander wasn't born there, it is still part of Africa and I traveled there with the Starkey Foundation and gave the gift of hearing to people of all ages. So it is the best of both worlds for us!

About our African Partners...

The books we collect will be sent to Makhai Primary School in Uganda which supports Pre-school through 4th grade readers! They have 838 students and its almost 50/50 girls and boys. They are currently in the process of setting up a library and have about 500 books which about 430 of them are text books and are currently being stored in a closet. We are the only book drive matched with this school and they are thrilled!

The book drive will begin on September 30, 2019 and end on October 28, 2019. Please drop books off at my mother's house at 63 N. Second St, Campbell, CA 95008 any time between those dates. We will keep a bin on the front porch or feel free just to drop on the porch if the bin is full or not there. You can also have books shipped directly to me if you're buying new books. Please ship to:
Sasha Taylor at 128 S. First St., Campbell CA 95008.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

We need to raise $500 for the shipping of the books. I am contributing $350.00 so we only need an additional $150.00. If you'd rather donate money for shipping costs, please feel free to do so. You can Venmo or PayPal me and note that it is for shipping costs. I will do my best to update this site regularly so we don't go over the requested amount.

700 books $500.00 fundraising

London's Pre School has agreed to help us collect books and allowed me to put two collection bins at the school. They sent a wonderful email to all of the parents letting them know and we are so thankful for their support. This should be a big help.

We hit the shipping goals.! Thanks to Michele Sharkey for the final donation. Any other funds collected will be used to buy used books. Thanks so much!

Thanks to Chase, Liz, Jim and Bruce for being the first to donate. Chase and Bruce also donated toward the shipping cost, so we're only $50 away from covering the whole $500!!! Now we need to get the books rolling in! Thanks to Michele S and Nicole for cash donations.. to complete the shipping and to buy books. THANK YOU Mara and Poppy for donating money to buy used books! A special thank you to Carolyn Hoskins for donating tons of books and thanks to Mary N for getting books from the Friends of the Library!
Thanks to Dana Smith for organizing a donation of at least 200 books from the Recycled Book Store and thank you so much to the Campbell location of Recycled Books! I'm so excited!!!
