Books 4 Botswana

09/02/2019 to 02/29/2020
Honolulu HI

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

My name is Haley Hobbs, and I am a junior at 'Iolani School in Honolulu, Hawai'i. I am collecting books to donate to a Secondary/Junior High School Library in Botswana.

Each year, my sister and I are left with multiple textbooks that we are unable to sell or even donate. We also have books we've read over the years, and many places, even our public libraries, have little need for them. A friend told me about the African Library Project, and I thought it was a great way to tackle this consumption waste and share my love of learning.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

As humans, we have a natural desire to learn: we ask questions and choose not to settle with the knowns, to explore beyond our boundaries. This is why we seek to understand our universe, and why we won't accept that there is no cure for cancer. Reading sparks our creativity and helps to satisfy this thirst for knowledge.

In the United States, books are very accessible to children through public libraries. Let's create the same opportunity for children in Africa. At a minimal shipping cost, we can create a library with your used books that, otherwise, would have ended up in our landfills.

About our African Partners...

The books will go to a Secondary/Junior High School Library in Botswana, benefiting children in grades 2-8. Primary school in Botswana is free and is attended by 86% of the children. However, only 35% go on to secondary school, as children take over household responsibilities. Because primary school is so critical, a library can help reinforce a love of learning during these formative years.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

new/gently used books at 2nd-8th grade reading level:
- Juvenile literature
- Children’s fiction and non-fiction
- Dictionaries
- Encyclopedias less than 15 years old
- Accurate up-to-date atlases
- Thesauruses
- Math books from 6th grade up (algebra, geometry, pre-calculus)
- English books (grammar/comprehension)
- Geography books
- Health books
- Science books (general science, biology, chemistry, physics)
- Life skills books (health, hygiene, adolescence, careers)
- Books with universal themes (friendships, animals, love)
- Books with inspiring stories and life skills lessons (ie: Chicken Soup for the Soul)
