Katie's Book Drive

04/15/2019 to 06/01/2019
Holliston MA

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

My name is Katie Crews, I am a Freshman in High school and with the help of my dad I am trying to create a school library in Malawi, in memory of my grandma.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

Reading is important, to help educate young minds for their future. Being held back because of lack of resources for education, shouldn't be a struggle for anyone. We want to try and provide these kids with just as many opportunities as everyone else, by giving them books to fuel their creative minds starting at a young age, grades 4-8. This Malawi book drive is in memory of my loving, caring and book loving grandma, Pat Jensen. She always did her best to donate her time to volunteer and help others in her community. She was a book fanatic and would always share her recommendations with those around her. I hope to carry her love of books all the way to Malawi.

About our African Partners...

I am paired with a School in Malawi called Lakeview Secondary School. They are in need of educational resource books as well as some English literature from grades 4-12. The only organization in their community who has tried to support the library is the National Library Service, but the school must pay an annual fee to get new books. Due to lack of money this school has been unable to pay the fee for the past two years, meaning no new books have been provided to help teach young students. Most of the time, students attend the library to get additional information for school projects and assignments, this is why educational books would be the most useful.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

The school is most need of education books to help provide extra information for school projects and assignments. We are collecting books for 8-12 graders, but books in the 4-8 grade range should be OK, too.

The specific kinds of books the school has requested are:

  • Teacher's resource books for school libraries

  • Dictionaries

  • Encyclopedias less than 15 years old

  • Accurate up-to-date atlases

  • Thesauruses

  • Math books from 6th grade up, including algebra, geometry, and pre-calculus, English books (focusing on grammar or comprehension), geography books, health books, science books including general science, biology, chemistry, and physics at appropriate level.

  • Life skills books about health, hygiene, adolescence, careers, etc.

  • Books with universal themes (friendships, animals, love)

  • Books like Chicken Soup for the Soul (inspiring stories with life skills lessons)

  • Books about Africa or African-Americans

  • Educational kids science and literary magazines in good condition

  • Brain teasers, flash cards, educational games and puzzles
