We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is being organized by Helen Sawyer, a seventh grader in Eugene Oregon.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

I love to read, and between libraries, book stores, and books I already own, I have access to almost all of the books I could ever want. I feel lucky and fortunate, and I want others to have the same opportunities that I have.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

We will create a secondary community library, so we mostly want 4th-8th grade level books, with some books for younger kids.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

Book drop sites located in Spencer Butte Middle School and Edgewood Community Elementary School office.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

Additionally, we need to raise $500 for shipping the books to Africa. If you are interested in making a donation, please visit our Paypal Pool at
Also, money can be taken to the front office at Spencer Butte Middle School
