DuBois to Malawi African Library Project

02/01/2019 to 04/30/2019
DuBois PA

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

We are 3 sophomore girls at DuBois Area High School.
Sarah is the captain of the sophomore reading competition team, the vice president of her 4-H club, a member of DAHS DECA, DAHS NHS, the DAHS Biology Club, and the DAHS Science Team and Scholastic Challenge Team. She volunteers with Wasson Big Brothers Big Sisters and attends St. Luke’s United Church of Christ in Luthersburg.
Maryclaire is a member of the DAHS tennis team and rifle team, DAHS ITS, DAHS NHS, and is an alto in the DAHS chorus. She is a lifeguard in treasure lake and teaches swimming lessons at the DuBois YMCA.
Emily is a member of the DAHS tennis team, the DAHS sophomore reading competition team, DAHS NHS, DAHS ITS, and is an alto in the DAHS chorus. She attends DuBois First Baptist Church.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

We want to start a library because education is a gift that repeats itself and leads to a brighter future. We have been very blessed to be able to attend good schools and have an abundance of books around us. We understand that many young people around the world do not have these same opportunities. Especially in many African countries, children have to walk miles to get to overcrowded and underequipped schools, if they get to go to school at all. These schools are often poorly equipped. They have only a few old books, maybe a chalkboard and a piece of chalk, and a teacher. Students must bring their own pencils and paper, but many don’t have them. Over the summer, as Sarah was going through her own books, she found a lot of children’s books/ easy chapter books. As she was looking for places to donate these books, she found the African library project. After talking it over with her friends we decided to run a book drive for a new African Library Project library in Malawi.
