Turn the Page, Unite the World

09/11/2018 to 01/21/2019

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

My name is Alex Teplish. I Immigrated to the United States from Odessa, Ukraine (former Soviet Union) when I was just 2 years old. Growing up in a prosperous country like the United States has come with its benefits, especially access to countless amounts of education materials and books. I am grateful to have been brought up with such access, but unfortunately, not everyone in the world is as lucky. My goal is to have an impact on the world around me, with the help of my friends, family, and community. This book drive will help us come together and assist a community that has not been as fortunate. Since I am based in Long Island/Brooklyn, New York, but often drive through and visit New Jersey and Pennsylvania, I will be organizing the collection of books for this drive in a variety of communities that I have access to.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

Helping to improve the world, and ourselves in the process, is the most profound meaning to life. We should all do what we can, to leave behind a better world, even if it is an occasional small act of kindness. As many of us know, “There is power in unity and there is power in numbers” (-Martin Luther King Jr.). When we come together as a community, our acts are multiplied and even more impactful. I have therefore decided to join forces with the African Library Project, to help people in a less fortunate part of our world. Rather than a fundraiser, with people just donating money, not knowing what will be done with it, I am organizing a book drive to start a library for a community in Ghana. I cannot do this alone and need everyone’s help. Imagine how many young lives your book(s) could impact. The goal is to collect at least 1,000 U.S. preschool-8th grade softcover books, along with a small amount of funds (used to pay for shipping). This project is symbolically being kicked off on September 11, 2018 with a completion date of January 21, 2019 (Martin Luther King Jr. Day).
