African Library Project

Libraries Love Libraries - Kalamazoo Public Library Book Drive for Swaziland!

06/25/2018 to 09/01/2018
Kalamazoo MI

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

The Kalamazoo Public Library is a place for everyone to explore, discover, and engage. Organized in 1860 and opened to the general public in 1872, Kalamazoo Public Library now serves a district population of 116,000 through five locations plus multiple outreach ventures. Many Southwest Michigan residents use Kalamazoo Public Library through reciprocal agreements with neighboring libraries.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

Childhood literacy has always been a major focus for the Kalamazoo Public Library. We strive to provide equal and open access to patrons of all ages. By having this book drive, we are enforcing this belief that all children should have the opportunity to read and learn through literacy.
This year, we are traveling around the world in 90 days for our summer reading challenge. The challenge requires each participant to read for 20 minutes a day. After 15, 30, and 45 days each participant receives a book as a prize. After 60 days, the participant will receive the grand prize of either a summer reading t-shirt or a canvas bag.
Our theme this year encourages our patrons to read and learn about other areas of the world. This book drive gives us the chance to reach out and help one of these areas. In our case, it is Swaziland, in Africa.

About our African Partners...

Our books will be going to the Ludzeludze Primary School in Swaziland.

Please contribute these kinds of books...
