African Library Project

From Auburn to Africa: Books for Kenya

10/06/2017 to 11/09/2017
Auburn NY

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

The Kids With Pride Team at Genesee Elementary School and members of the National Junior Honor Society at Auburn Junior High School in Auburn, New York. These groups represent a dedicated group of students who are determined to bring happiness through books!

We want to start a library in Africa because...

We love our libraries; in fact, we may take them for granted in that they are a central part of our school day. Our libraries are where we go when we need to seek out information, find answers to our questions, or just need a book to read. The thought of not having this in a school community is unacceptable to us. In effect, we want to build this library not only to bring books and literacy but we also hope to bring a new space into this community. We hope these books, this space and the knowledge that these community members seek out only empowers them to keep reading and keep seeking!

About our African Partners...

We are sending books to:
Lianda Primary School on Rusing Island
The school serves 308 students and has never had a library. A storage room is being converted into a library with hopes of developing a love of reading!

Please contribute these kinds of books...

U.S. pre-school to 8th grade reading level (there is a special request for books that focus on fishing)

Here's how you can contribute your books...

Please drop books off to the main office at Auburn Junior High School or Genesee Elementary School (just tell them they are for the African Library Project).

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

There will be various fundraisers during the month of October that students will hold to raise money. If you would personally like to contribute, please contact Anne Mlod (Kids With PRIDE Team co-advisor, 315-255-8642) or Marcella Didio (National Junior Honor Society advisor, 315-255-8480). Thank you for all of your support!
