Adriana's African Library Project

08/05/2016 to 11/20/2016
Oakland CA

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

My name is Adriana and for the last year I have been working on a project I call, "The Giving Year." The idea is to serve others within my community and outside of it as well. There are daily acts of service along with monthly drives that embrace the concept of giving. The African Library Project fits in with what The Giving Year is all about.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

My journey to begin a library in Africa began with a daily act of service. I work with children and one of the kids brought home a flyer from school. The flyer detailed a teacher's need to collect books for a library in Africa for the African Library Project. I had never heard of the African Library Project before but I knew the moment that I read the flyer that I wanted to donate books to the teacher.

I put my donation date on my daily acts of service calendar for the following month. While I gathered books to donate, I felt inside of me was brewing the need to do my own library for Africa. I could not deny what I knew I wanted to do. I decided to officially kick off my library book donation portion in August and had already started the fundraising in July. I made the monthly drive for August for the African Library Project.

I have always loved books. I wanted to be a part of increasing not only literacy but the love of books for someone else. Books are amazing tools of knowledge that have the potential to empower people to do all sorts of things. I knew from the beginning that I really wanted to help be a part of creating a library for people who desired to have one.

About our African Partners...

My book drive is for a partner in Botswana and the library is for Chakaloba Primary. I am the only book drive matched to this school. My library is a Primary Library and includes pre-school to 4th grade reading level books.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

I need books for a primary school library: Books at U.S. pre-school to 4th grade reading level.

The types of books that I am collecting include:

Baby board books
Early readers
Picture books

Books with universal themes of love, friendship, and animals
Teacher's resource books for school libraries
Children’s encyclopedias/picture encyclopedias

Accurate up-to-date atlases
Educational children's science and literary magazines in good condition

Lastly, I need games that are aimed to improve teaching.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

I have a bin on my porch where people can drop off books. I am also wiling to pick up books in the Bay Area. Email me and I will send you my address for you to bring books to the house or mail them to me.

I am in the process of trying to place bins in certain businesses for people to drop off books. As the bins get accepted, I will post their locations.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

I am in the planning and executing stages for fundraising events to help me attain my goal of $500.
