Arlo's African Library Project

03/27/2016 to 05/15/2016
Seattle WA

The African Library Project brings gently used books to an African community that has lots of eager readers but very few books. Please help by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It only takes 1000 books and $500 to start a single library (and a little elbow grease!)

This book drive is organized by ...

Hi I am Arlo. I am 8 1/2 years old and I live in Seattle Washington and am in 2nd grade at Orca K-8 school. Mostly I love playing with my friends! I've taken classes in gymnastics, swimming, bouldering, chess, sewing, basketball, soccer, and a million other things, and now I'm taking piano and ballet and I'm in a chorus with my mom. But mostly I just like playing with friends! I have a dog and two cats and some fish. I love to sing and Taylor Swift is my favorite but I like all kinds of music and in my chorus we even sing African songs sometimes. I've been to Canada and Mexico and some day I'd like to go to Africa and see the library we create!

We want to start a library in Africa because...

I love stories. I am just starting to really read books by myself, and right now I'm reading "Diary of a Wimpy Kid." My moms have read to me since I was born and I can't imagine if I didn't have books in my life. We have a lot of books I don't read anymore because they are for little kids so I am giving them to kids in Africa who hardly have any books at all. I need your help because I don't have 1000 books of my own! Please donate books to our African Library Project. Thank you!

About our African Partners...

We are organizing a primary school library in Malawi, which is in the southern part of Africa. I learned that people in Malawi are very poor. Half of them live on under $1.25 per day so I don't think they can buy books because food is more important! I have a lot of books and I don't even read most of them anymore. For our library, we need books for kids from preschool to 8th grade--but mostly for kids preschool to 4th grade.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

Our library is a primary school library so we need about 600-700 books for kids from pre-school to 4th grade and another 300-400 books for kids 5th-8th grade. They should be in good condition and in English. All kinds of topics or types of books are great!

Here's how you can contribute your books...

We need to collect all our books by mid-May so we can organize and box them by the end of May to send. Please contact my mom Carolyn by email at carolyn_halley@hotmail.com or even better by text at 206-295-9859. Let us know how many books you have approximately and we will arrange to get them. Thank you!

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

I have about $180 or maybe a little more in my charity donation jar that I've been saving for 2 years and I am donating that. We need $500 to ship the books to Africa. If you would like to donate to this that would be great!

Here are some ways that you can help...

1. Donate books (even 5 books!)!
2. Donate money (even $1)!
3. Ask your friends to donate books (even 1 friend)!
4. Thank you!
