The African Library Project brings gently used books to an African community that has lots of eager readers but very few books. Please help by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It only takes 1000 books and $500 to start a single library (and a little elbow grease!)

This book drive is organized by ...

My name is Jake Albertson. I live in West Chicago, Illinois and am 9 years old. I am in 3rd Grade and go to Algonquin Lakes Elementary School. I found out about literacy issues around the world from my friend Gigi in California. Her school had a book drive and I was wondering what I could do to help other kids so I decided to have a book drive too! For the next two months, my goal is to collect 1,000 donated books and $500 and with the partnership of ALP, I will send them to Malawi, Africa so Gala Primary School can build a library for their students.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

I would like to help children to read and love books. A lot of children in Africa don't know how to read and creating a library for them can help them learn how to read.

About our African Partners...

I have been paired with Gala Primary School in the country of Malawi, Africa. The books donated will be enjoyed by nearly 600 students!
(Primary school is the equivalent to U.S. Elementary and Middle Schools)

There are 15 million people in Malawi and only 75% of adults can read and write. By introducing the importance of reading and writing at a young age, we can increase those numbers!

African reading levels are lower than US levels. With poor access to reading materials and learning to read in a second language, literacy tops out, even for teachers, at about the 8th grade U.S. level in the rural areas (where our school is).

Most secondary education in Africa requires fluency in English or French. The ALP starts libraries in countries that require children to read and write in English in order to complete their secondary school education. That is why we are sending books in English!

*****UPDATE******
I have collected so many books that African Library Project has paired me with an additional school in Malawi that needs a library: Cobby Barracks has Preschool - 6th Grade.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

Both Gala Primary School and Cobby Barracks are Primary Schools, so I am looking for Preschool- 8th Grade reading level.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

*****UPDATE******
For each library, shipping to Africa is going to be estimated to cost about $500.

--$250 domestic shipping to New Orleans where they will be loaded on June 1st, 2016 into a shipping container and sent on a boat to Africa
--$250 international shipping covers the cost of the shipping container as well as customs fees and additional charges once they get to Africa in order to actually get them to Malawi!
(These costs are estimated and are ultimately based on weight)

Please click here to donate to the cost of our International Shipping!!
