Central Park East 1 African Library Project

02/01/2016 to 05/02/2016
New York NY

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

Central Park East 1. We are a Pre-K through 5th grade progressive education school located in East Harlem, New York.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

CPE 1 has always fostered a strong foundation for the love of reading. Our students bring home a new book every day to read or have read to them. Sometimes they learn about science or history, but more importantly they learn about ideas different from their own which expands their view of the world in a time when the world needs a broader look. This is true for children in New York City but even more important for kids in places that have little access to ideas beyond their town or village. We hope to offer a chance for these children to have access to this wider view of the world.

About our African Partners...

This library will be created for elementary school children in Sierra Leone.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

We are collecting books for an elementary school library similar to our age range at CPE1. Please donate board books, picture books, children's encyclopedias, dictionaries, early readers, fiction, non-fiction, science, etc. Be sure the books are not focused on any specific religion or are about holidays, traditions, or anything that is specific to only the US, ie: Halloween, 4th of July, US History, etc.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

You will be able to drop off books at CPE1 during one of two book drive periods. The first will take place March 7, 8, and 9. The second will take place April 11, 12, and, 13. There will be a book bin in the cafeteria during drop-off, and a second book bin outside the library on the second floor.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

In addition to collecting books for the new library in Sierra Leone, we will also be accepting donations for the shipping fees. These are estimated to cost around $500.

Here are some ways that you can help...

We will need help in various parts of the book drive including:

- picking up and dropping off books to the school and to the post-office (people with cars!)

- working with me to help raise the necessary funds for shipping

- helping with sorting, packaging, and labeling boxes for shipment

- getting the word out to others who might have children's books they no longer need

This project is being launched through Catlin and Lindsay's classroom. They have been working with their students on lessons about Africa and African cultures. The class will work on making signs, organizing books, and general help throughout the process.
