Viet's African Library Project

7/7/10 to 09/01/2015
San Jose CA

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

Hi, my name is Viet Nguyen. Besides being a high school senior at Leland High School, I'm a member of boy scout troop 230. For my eagle scout project, I've decided to start a book drive to open a library in Sierra Leone. I will be looking to collect 1000 books for 4th through 8th graders and raise $500 to ship these books overseas. This is an aggressive goal because I hope to complete my project by September 1st. However, with your help, we can fund this library.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

The books that we hope to collect will provide educational resources for students of the Mokanji School in Sierra Leone. Your donation would make a large impact in these students lives— a large number of African children are illiterate and aren't educated. Even those who attend schools don't have access to the same resources that American schools have. Providing a library for African students would provide them with the ability to learn as well as all of the opportunities that come from a quality education. Your contribution can make a huge difference in the education of these children and positively impact there lives.

About our African Partners...

I'm partnered with the AVSS Mokanji School in Sierra Leone. Your books will go to provide resourses for 4th through 8th graders in this school. Currently the school does not have access to a nearby library, but this all could change with your help.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

For our library we are looking for 4th through 8th grade books. Dictionaries, encyclopedias, and textbooks would also be great donations.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

We'll manage picking up books through a case by case basis. If it's not a hassle, you can drop your books off at 7173 Josslyn Drive. Otherwise, we can arrange a time for me to pick up the books at your address.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

So far I am preparing fundraising activities with my boy scout troop. I am also fundraising through this website. If you would like to donate to cover the shipping costs, you can do so through the following link: http://www.africanlibraryproject.org/about-us/donations. Please use the code SL3-23 and refer to my name(Viet Nguyen) so that your donation can go to our partnered library.

Here are some ways that you can help...

In order to build a library we are looking to collect 1000 middle school level books and raise $500 to ship them overseas. You can contact us using the contact information below if you're interested in donating books or money for our project.
