Carini African Library Project

The African Library Project brings gently used books to an African community that has lots of eager readers but very few books. Please help by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It only takes 1000 books and $500 to start a single library (and a little elbow grease!)

This book drive is organized by ...

Every year I tell myself that this will be the year that we give back to the community by helping those who need it.....and every year slips by and my good intentions follow. Well, this year is different! I heard about the African Library Project and it seemed like a PERFECT fit for us!

We all love to read, Peter teaches English, we have a TON of kids, and we definitely value the importance of accessibility to education. That's why we have committed to gathering 1,000 books for a community library at Samu Baptist Secondary School in Sierra Leone, West Africa.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

Our family has so many advantages that many worldwide don't. We have a home that we love, family surrounding us, opportunities to learn new things, more than enough food to eat, our clothes are clean, and we have clean water to drink EVERY day. We have books at our fingertips any time we want them and often buy them....to read....for fun. It rarely occurs to me what a privilege this is.

About our African Partners...

If I had any trepidation about being able to gather these books it disappeared when I read the application that had been sent on behalf of the school - requesting the materials to set up a library and the commitment conveyed in every word of the letters sent by members of the community.

They're counting on these books.....they're counting on US.

These books will provide more than stories and facts. They'll provide opportunities for young people to realize that they can set goals and dream dreams that might lead them to wonderful things. They'll open doors into imagination and creativity that they may not have realized if not for the library. They will learn skills and be able to share them with others as well.

Our partners in Africa are at the Samu Baptist Secondary School in Sierra Leone and the Carini Family African Library Project is the only one to be matched up with them! They are in dire need of learning materials and are very excited to be matched with a partner here in the States (that's US!). They expect to support 400 students and readers and are planning on setting up a room in the school building of their farming community. The school has no electricity at this time and as you may know, students were only recently allowed to go back to school after an ebola outbreak last year. Educational activities have been stalled and as a result, teen pregnancy has been increasing. The library will also provide needed jobs in the community.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

We are specifically looking for books suitable for pre-K through 8th grade for our community library.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

Starting today (June 8th), I'll be making myself available to come and collect your gently used books! I will come to you, we can meet half-way, or you can bring them and drop them at our front door (just email me for directions or the address if you don't know it!).

I want to make this easy for you! If you have a mom's group, homeschool, or an office you attend on a regular basis PLEASE ask for books on our behalf! ONE THOUSAND books is a huge undertaking and we won't be able to reach our goal and get the Samu Baptist Secondary School their books without your help!

OUR DEADLINE IS AUGUST 31, 2015.....It may seem far away, but it's really right around the corner!

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

If your book-stashing days have long passed or you want to hold on to your books, perhaps you can consider helping us raise funds for shipping and handling! It's going to take some money to get these books to the New Orleans African Library Project Warehouse and then on to our partners.

Please send checks to 5508 Jonathan Drive, Newark, CA

Here are some ways that you can help...

There is NO way that we will be able to reach this huge goal without help and LOTS of it!!

HUGE Carini thanks to my coworkers, Shannon and Julie, for helping jumpstart our library for Samu Baptist Secondary School!! We are on our way!

This last weekend we were able to collect another 430 books! The generosity of our friends and coworkers is humbling and beautiful to see. MANY heartfelt thanks to Elisabeth Bandy and Ann Balva in particular.

Blessings!

Whenever you read a good book, somewhere in the world a door opens to allow in more light.
