Book Drive for Children in Africa
The African Library Project brings gently used books to an African community that has lots of eager readers but very few books. Please help by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It only takes 1000 books and $500 to start a single library (and a little elbow grease!)
This book drive is organized by ...
Hi, my name is Ann Balva, a mom of two young boys. As a mom, I always look for an event like this to serve the world community together with my children. I am a stay-home mom working part time for a non-profit organization in San Francisco (www.lilycaidance.org). I truly appreciate my husband providing unlimited support for my role. I thank my children for giving me a chance to stay with them, and watch them grow. We love outdoor activities. Taking our children to nature and traveling around U.S. or internationally are always part of family life. Stuffing their bookshelves with a variety of books or simply strolling around the library has immersed them into the pool of knowledge. My older one, Arthur, loves reading. In addition to non-fiction books, he reads about 1 to 2 fiction books every two weeks. My younger one, Luka, loves reading as well. And, he transforms his reading and imagination into comics sometimes. A child’s mind is a sponge. He or she simply intakes any info from media, and then creates something tremendously. It matters how we, adults, guide them into the right path of learning and even creation. Indeed, I truly believe books are the source of knowledge. And, I wish you to join my boys and me. Let’s bring "knowledge" to children in Sierra Leone.

We want to start a library in Africa because...
Thanks to our best friend, Ms. Erika Papakipos, who introduced us this great opportunity. Residing in Palo Alto with rich resources, I believe we definitively have something extra to give and pass to other children in needs. Here is our chance to give a hand to children in need in Africa. In addition to supporting children in Africa for their physical needs, this is a great chance to boost their knowledge through books. Browse your bookshelves, and give out those out-of-age books to them. Books are a source of knowledge. Let's not let "knowledge" remain in your shelves.
About our African Partners...
We are sending books for 2 schools, God's Project Academy School and Roman Catholic Primary School, in Sierra Leone.
Please contribute these kinds of books...
For this book drive, we are seeking your help to collect 2,000 preschool - 8th grade reading level books with a heavy emphasis on preschool - 4th. But, any book from 5th to 8th grade is also very welcome.
Here's how you can contribute your books...
Please contact me for pick up. I'd love to come meet and thank you in person if you are in Palo Alto area. If not, I'd love to discuss how to ship books to me.
There will be few places for you to drop off your books in the near future. Locations are to be determined. I am currently under planning with few organizations to set up drop off locations.
We need to raise funds for shipping the books...
Your monetary contribution is also very helpful for us to pay for domestic and international shipping cost. We are in need about $1,000 - about $400 to ship books to African Library Project warehouse in New Orleans and the other $600 to share of the International shipping of the container. Please contact me via email for monetary contribution. I will send you detailed instruction.
Here are some ways that you can help...
We currently collected 2000 books and ready to ship. But we are short of domestic shipping fee about $500. If you pull like to contribute, please contact me. If you know any Fedex employee, I'd love to seek for their sponsor. I was told that Fedex employees may have benefits from the company to ship goods for free.

|Our Goal||2000 books||$1000 fundraising|
|Results so far
|2000 books||$700.00 fundraising|
Mission complete!!! We shipped total of 2000 books (17 boxes) on 8/27 and 8/28 to the warehouse in New Orleans. In the very first run of fundraising, we raised $500 which is enough to cover international shipping. Last week, with the support of my long-term friend, Dr. Melanie Hahn, we successfully raised sufficient fund for domestic shipping. All 2000 books will be loaded in an ocean container in September, and ready to go Africa for those children in needs! Thanks for all friends who support these two book drives. Without your support, we can not achieve today's mission!
Let "knowledge" fly out from your bookshelves to those children in needs.
