UBRP for ASUM

03/01/2015 to 05/08/2015
Tucson AZ

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

The Undergraduate Biology Research Program (UBRP) enhances undergraduate education by partnering with the research resources of the University of Arizona to provide opportunities for students to participate in mentored, self-directed work which contributes to the fund of new knowledge. Students' projects involve inquiry, design, investigation, research, scholarship, discovery, and the presentation of experimental results.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

The goal of UBRP is to provide as many people as possible with an interactive and engaging science education that they can utilize in their future careers. We are passionate about education and the empowerment that it can provide to others, which is why we seek to expand our reach and participate in the African Library Project, helping those who wish to have a brighter future.

About our African Partners...

ASUM Boys Academy is a boarding school in Malawi with students who can benefit from assistance in reaching their full potential. They seek to have a library that exposes them to the breadth of subjects (science, math, history, and English) and increases their excitement for knowledge and school. Their village is in the Songani area, or more specifically, the academy is located in the Kapyekapye village in Zomba, Malawi. Additionally, the local leaders have agreed to support the establishment of this library, with letters of commitment from the school's principal, the librarian, and the village headman.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

Gently used preschool - 8th grade reading level books with a heavy emphasis on 4th - 8th (about 2/3). If possible, please include teacher resource materials such as books, lesson plans, posters and games aimed at improving teaching.
