Max's Bar Mitzvah African Library Project

03/05/2015 to 05/08/2015
Bethesda MD

The African Library Project brings gently used books to an African community that has lots of eager readers but very few books. Please help by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It only takes 1000 books and $500 to start a single library (and a little elbow grease!)

This book drive is organized by ...

My name is Max Block. I am a 7th grade student at Westland Middle School. While I like skiing, baseball, and soccer, I have always liked reading before I could play any sports.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

I would like to start a library in Africa so that other kids can learn to read. I think learning to read is one of the most important skills in life. Being able to read can help people find ways out of poverty and to learn to do more than they believed they could. Kids can't succeed if they can't read. I want to change that.

About our African Partners...

ALP has connected me with the Sedibeng Primary School South Africa - its a small rural village near Kuruman. There are a little over 400 girls and boys in need of gently used English school books.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

They have requested topics like social science, language, philosophy, general literature, history, fables and fiction. If you have primary school books or workbooks, or old teacher or math or reading text or practice books would be very helpful. Anything for education or just reading would be good. They need mostly pre-school - 4th grade, and some 4th - 8th grade books.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

There are several ways to help. I have a book box on my porch. If you have a number of books to donate, please email me at ablockmitzvah@gmail.com. I will come and pick up books from you if you live in the Bethesda area.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

Please contact me at ablockmitzvah@gmail.com if you would like to donate funds to support shipping the books it would be great if you sent a check.

Here are some ways that you can help...

If you live in the Bethesda area, you can donate books. If you don't, you can donate money for shipping. We will also need help sorting and packing books in early May.
