River's African Library Project

02/26/2015 to 04/30/2015
Woodside CA

The African Library Project brings gently used books to an African community that has lots of eager readers but very few books. Please help by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It only takes 1000 books and $500 to start a single library (and a little elbow grease!)

This book drive is organized by ...

My name is River, I am 8 year old boy in 3rd grade and I love to read. I was inspired to do this project by a documentary that I watched online. Did you know that 80% of schools in South Africa don't have libraries? I think that kids in South Africa should learn how to read, because to understand how to read is the most important part of education. For example it is important to be able to read receipts for grocery bills, how to read stories, how to read signs- other than "pictures" such as bathroom signs. I think that every living person deserves to have a full education, INCLUDING reading. I know in my school, we have personal reading time and I believe that every school should be like my school.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

I love to read and I know that people that are poor would love to have books to read too. You might ask me why I love to read. Well, I love to read because you can learn so many things from just a few pages in a hard cover book. I hope I inspire other South African children to love to read as well.

About our African Partners...

Our goal is to get 1000 books and $500 to create a new library for the use of children of multiple ages. (Preschool to 8th grade) I will find out the name of my school soon!

Please contribute these kinds of books...

Please donate books at U.S. pre-school to 8th grade reading level.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

We need to raise at least $500 to ship the library to South Africa. We are going to raise money by setting up a lemonade stand for thirsty cyclists and people that are willing to stop their car to buy my lemonade to help the children of South Africa to read.

Please donate cash or books. Even one dollar helps.

Thank you!

Here are some ways that you can help...

Please help by donating money and books if you can. If you donate books please make sure they are lightly used and readable, not ripped or torn. We want the South African kids to have books in good condition. Books should be for Preschool to U.S. 8th grade.
