AFRICAN LIBRARY PROJECT (ALP)
Chester County, PA

02/11/2015 to 03/27/2015
Downingtown PA

The African Library Project brings gently used books to an African community that has lots of eager readers but very few books. Please help by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It only takes 1000 books and $500 to start a single library (and a little elbow grease!)

This book drive is organized by ...

This project is being organized by Trisha Smith, Matt Reif, Aisling Travers, Joe Smith and Margaret Reif.

We are just your typical American family spread across the globe, coming together with one purpose: Have Fun and Make a Difference...One Book at a Time!

We love reading and have so many books that our children have outgrown...why not put them to good use?

This is where we could use your help...

We want to start a library in Africa because...

We were inspired by a recent trip to Jasikan in Ghana, African where we met Patience, Ernest, and Livingston.

They are a group of fun loving kindergarten students. They showed up for school every day eager to learn but with one problem... NO BOOKS! Most children in the class did not have a pencil or paper.

We quickly dug out the only 3 books in the school that were donated by a volunteer. The eyes of the children lit up. They were learning what it meant to be "read to".

That's when we knew, we could make a difference. We asked ourselves "Why not?" Why not start a library for them?

About our African Partners...

We are partnering with Globe Aware (www.globeaware.org) and a local community committee to make this library a success. Bernard Bediako-Nayo is the local Team leader. He has reached out to Globe Aware for support in his village.

Members of the local committee include:
Mavis Gakpetor- Teacher at Bueman High School
Abigail- Teacher, Okadjakrom EP Primary School
Emmanuel Yirekye- Youth Leader
Jeff Lartey- Project coordinator

Please contribute these kinds of books...

• Boardbooks for young children and Paperback easy readers
• Paperback juvenile literature/chapter books
• K-8 texts (English, math, geography, science)
• Atlases & encyclopedias (less than 15 yrs. old)
• Paperback dictionaries
• Paperback children's picture books

Here's how you can contribute your books...

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

It costs approximately $600 to ship the books the village in Ghana.

If you would like to donate towards the shipping expenses, please contact us for information on how that can be arranged!

Here are some ways that you can help...

Collecting and getting the books where they need to be will take some effort!

If you are interested in helping, there are lots of things you can do!

Donate books/funds for shipping
Ask others to donate books/funds for shipping
Help organize a fundraising event
Come to a book packing party (date tbd)
Donate shipping supplies, etc!
Anything you can do, no matter how small, will go a long way to bring books to those that desperately need them!
