Madison's African Library Project

02/01/2015 to 03/01/2015
Austin TX

The African Library Project brings gently used books to an African community that has lots of eager readers but very few books. Please help by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It only takes 1000 books and $500 to start a single library (and a little elbow grease!)

This book drive is organized by ...

My name is Madison, and I am doing a community project for my middle school. I've always wanted to make some kind of difference in a needy community, and I finally had a chance to help Swaziland, Africa. It would be great if you could donate any books to help start a new library, and also donate money to help ship the books over to Africa. Hopefully, we can make a big difference for the children's learning.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

There is so much poverty in Africa, and a lot of kids can't get their needs met. When I was in my room the other day, I looked at all the kids books in my closet that I have never used. I knew that there are several schools that are lacking these books that I don't need. I realized that I'm not the only one who leaves books in my closet for years without using them. That's why I created the Book drive for Swaziland, so people can donate their unused books for people who need them.

About our African Partners...

I am working with Ekumeni Primary School. I am currently the only book drive working with them at the moment. They currently have no library at all, and they are requesting books that have to do with subjects in school.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

If you can donate books that are from preschool-4th grade reading level. Please donate them gently used or new, and they must be in English. There is no maximum or minimum amount of books you can bring.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

My main book drive is at Grisham Middle School. From February 1st to March 1st, people can donate any books that reach the requirements. Donations will be accepted too.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

One of the biggest problems that I think we have is raising funds. Shipping prices are incredible high, and we need help to raise money for the books. If 1000 books are donated, we would need to raise at least 500 dollars. It's a big risk to take, but I feel like we can reach the goal

Here are some ways that you can help...

The best ways to help are:
1) Donate any new/gently used books from pre k- 4th grade.
2) Donate money of any amount
3) Tell your family and friends about this Book drive! Maybe they would be interested!

Progress Report

Our Goal 1000 (maximum) books $500 (maximum) fundraising
Results so far
(updated: February 17)
200 books $0 fundraising

Things are going pretty well, and I hope to meet about 400, or 500 books by the end of the book drive. People have told me that several books are on the way, so the number of books can dramatically raise over a couple of days.

Be sure to donate all books by March 2nd. Time may be extended to March 4th, but for now, March 2nd is the deadline.

Acknowledgements

Thank you for my middle school, and church for allowing the book drive to be there. Thank you to my parents, and my mentor at my school.

Tips for Other Book Drive Organizers
