Lauren's African Library Initiative

10/09/2014 to 03/15/2015
Ashburn VA

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

Hello! My name is Lauren Bavis, and I'm so excited to be working with Kuhlahla Primary School to start their very own library. I live in Ashburn, Viginia, and I have always been passionate about literacy and believe everyone should have the chance to experience the wonders of reading. Over the summer, I visited many schools and orphanages in South Africa that are full of children trying to master their reading skills, but struggling to do so without proper materials. It was here that the the idea for the African Library Initiative was born.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

I believe that everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy the gift of reading. By starting a library in Swaziland, I hope that the many children there will be able to learn and grow, and have a brighter future because of it.

About our African Partners...

Our African Partner is Kuhlahla Primary School Library in Swaziland. This is a rural school in a remote community in the northern part of the country in the Hhohho region. There are currently 400 eager students waiting there for new books. It is a community school where most students are orphans with little encouragement to attend school. Any and all help to support these children is greatly appreciated!

Please contribute these kinds of books...

Please donate books at U.S. pre-school to 4th grade reading level. If possible, please donate teacher resource materials such as books, lesson plans, posters and games aimed at improving teaching.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

Please email us if you would like to donate. There are donation boxes at Stone Bridge High School (43100 Hay Road, Ashburn, VA 20147) and the Belmont Country Club Community Center Pool House.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

We need to raise $500 to ship these books. To contribute, please visit our separate website listed on this page to pay through PayPal, or email us at AfricanLibraryInitiative@aol.com.

Here are some ways that you can help...

We are extremely grateful for any and all book and money donations. We would also love for you to help us spread the word - tell your friends and family and visit our website or email us to donate!
