African Library Project

Janani, Swetha and Jieun - 3 High School Students

11/10/2014 to 04/15/2015
San Ramon CA

The African Library Project brings gently used books to an African community that has lots of eager readers but very few books. Please help by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It only takes 1000 books and $500 to start a single library (and a little elbow grease!)

This book drive is organized by ...

Janani, Swetha, and Jieun; three high school students. We are an individual group that hopes to collect enough books to positively impact literacy in Ghana. We would like to share the magic of reading!

We want to start a library in Africa because...

It will provide a new learning center for children, increase literacy rates in Ghana, and give children a chance to broaden their knowledge. As Alan Moore says, "Knowledge, like air, is vital to life. Like air, no one should be denied it." Our minimum goal is 1,000 books but we hope to exceed this amount. With your help, we might be able to do so.

About our African Partners...

We have been partnered with GCD Basic School in Ghana. They are a primary school, and would really appreciate books in the preschool - 4th grade reading level.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

We are collecting books for primary school students, preschool to 4th grade. Some examples of the highest level books would be:
Horrible Harry by Susan Kline
Junie B. Jones series by Barbara Park
Magic Treehouse series (4th grade and below) by Mary Pope Osborne
Because of Winn-Dixie and Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo
Charlotte's Web by E.B. White
Please make sure the books you are donating are new to gently used. We are unable to send books that include:
Books that are filled with small, dense print that might be too intimidating or boring for the age level
Books with lots of slang, which may be difficult for English learners to follow
Books for very young children that have many references to appliances and electronic gadgets.
Adult paperback romance novels
Books about United States or Canadian history or government (but DO SEND books about African-Americans)
Books about North American or religious holidays (Easter, Halloween, Christmas, 4th of July, Thanksgiving, April Fools Day, Valentine’s Day, Chanukah, etc.)
Books that evangelize or promote a particular religion
Magazines except for children's educational magazines and National Geographics less than 5 years old

Here's how you can contribute your books...

We need to collect at least 1,000 books. Please contact Janani at the email address janani22@gmail.com if you have some spare books.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

If you are unable to send books, we would greatly appreciate any cash or check donations. Please make checks payable to Raj or Usha Natarajan, and be sure to include the "African Library Project" somewhere on the check.

Here are some ways that you can help...

Please spread the word to your family and friends. Share this link on your social media or with your coworkers. We really hope to collect at least 1,000 books and $500 by the end of March.
