Magdalena Alioto Grace and Cece Giarman's Book Drive for Malawi

04/06/2014 to 05/10/2014
San Francisco CA

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

Hi! Our names are Magdalena and Cece and we are two seventh grade girls from San Francisco. This year in our 2013-2014 English class, our grade was assigned to work on a Discovery Project. This project must relate to literature in some way. We wanted to work on a project that would help people who don’t have easy access to books like we do. We began researching non-profit foundations that helped offer books to people who don’t have access to them, and that’s when we came across the African Library Project. Illiteracy is a big problem in most parts of Africa and ALP’s mission is to build libraries for communities as a way to make sure children grow up reading.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

There are two reasons why we are collecting these donations. The first reason is that we want to spread the word of this problem of illiteracy. We want those that have access to books to be aware that there are children, not only in Africa, but all over the world who don’t have easy access to books. The second reason is that we want to make a difference. We know that collecting 1,000 books cannot solve all of the world’s problem, but 1,000 books can change 1,000 lives. If everyone in the world, who could, donated 1 book to a child without a book anywhere in the world, imagine what our world would be like. This is our true goal; to have every child in the world to grow up having access to books and learning as much as possible.

About our African Partners...

We will be collecting books for a secondary school in Malawi, Msenjere Secondary School.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

Our goal is to collect 1,000 books, 1/3 of which should be preschool-4th grade books and 2/3 of which should be 4th-8th grade books. These books can be on all kinds of subjects like science, mathematics, reference books, picture books, and novels.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

If your interested in donating books, please contact either Cece or Magdalena.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

For money donations, we will accept cash and checks. Please make checks payable to African Library Project. Thank you!
