We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

We are a public high school in Burlington-area Vermont. This project is sponsored by our Student Council and CVU Key Club.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

We believe it is our duty to foster a cyclic relationship in which we give back to the greater good as a result of having access to incredible educational resources. The value of education cannot be undermined and we want to show our appreciation by creating a source of educational resources for a community that currently has minimal access to them now.

About our African Partners...

Our partner is the Mileme School Community Library located in the Mileme Village in the Phalombe district of Malawi. About 2,800 readers will be accessing this library. The school says that most of the people in Mileme spend their free time reading books, but there simply aren't enough. When books aren't available, free time is being spent watching television or 'fishing at the lake'. The librarian presses that if there are books available, children will be encouraged to pursue their education as opposed to other things. The community is eager to use and take care of the books and library.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

Pre-school to 8th grade reading level, paperbacks
Teaching resource material
Educational games and puzzles are also accepted!

Here's how you can contribute your books...

Throughout the duration of the book drive, April 14th-May 2nd, there will be bins marked "Readhawks Support ALP" in CVU's main office, library, and in the cafeteria during lunch blocks (11:30-1:30).

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

In order to ship the books to the warehouse in New Orleans, LA as well as internationally to Malawi, we need to raise about $300. Please donate "a book and a buck"-- your books and preferably a dollar per book to cover shipping costs. Money donations will also be accepted at the front desk, by the library staff, or during lunch blocks.

Here are some ways that you can help...

Please get the word out there: to your neighbors, friends, family, anyone who would be interested in donating gently used books.
