Canterbury Elementary School - Mrs. Mahoney's 2nd Grade ELA Class
ALP Code SL2-05

Cleveland Heights OH

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

Mrs. Mahoney's 2nd Grade ELA (English/Language Arts) Class is excited to create a library for kids our age who live in Sierra Leone. We are using our writing skills to raise money to pay for shipping and we have made flyers to collect books from every classroom at Canterbury. We appreciate the help of the 2nd Grade Helping Club, who will assist us with sorting the books as we prepare to ship them.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

... because it is not fair that some children in Africa have never held a book in their hands.
... because we enjoy reading and want other kids to enjoy it, too.
... because we care.

About our African Partners...

We are giving to a small school in a remote area of Sierra Leone. We are learning about Sierra Leone as a class and will add information as we learn.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

WE HAVE COMPLETED OUR BOOK DRIVE.
Our shipment includes books for pre-school to 4th grade reading levels and teacher resources. Thank you to everyone who has contributed!

Here's how you can contribute your books...

WE ARE NO LONGER COLLECTING BOOKS - WE HAVE MET AND SURPASSED OUR GOAL!

If you are in the CHUH area and would like to start your own ALP book drive, we have surplus books that we would be happy to pass along!

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

We are raising money to pay to ship the books to New Orleans and then to pay for our space on the shipping container from New Orleans to Sierra Leone. The container leaves in mid-May.

Cash can be dropped off at the Canterbury office, to Mrs. Mahoney or to Shari Nacson. WE ARE NO LONGER ACCEPTING ONLINE DONATIONS, AS WE HAVE MET OUR ONLINE GOAL OF $300 TO PAY OUR SHIPPING CONTAINER FEE.

Here are some ways that you can help...

We have done a great job collecting books and the funds to cover shipping. Please consider a small cash donation delivered to the school before May 9th. In addition, we welcome shipping discounts or donations via FedEx or UPS (if you have a connection, please let us know!).

If each Canterbury student donates 3 books, we will meet our goal of 1000 books!!!

Progress Report

Our Goal 1000 books $500 fundraising
Results so far
(updated: 5/5/14)
1000 books $395 fundraising

Thank you to the Canterbury PTA and our online donors! We have met our goal of $300 to cover the shipping container fee. We are still collecting cash locally to pay for postage from CLE to New Orleans. We anticipate needing another $50-$100 for local postage.

WE ARE PACKING OUR COLLECTION FOR SHIPMENT!
This coming week we will inventory our library and seal boxes to send to New Orleans. Students in Mrs. Mahoney's ELA Class will be able to include messages on the packing slips.

Acknowledgements

Thank you Mrs. Mahoney for inspiring us! We are excited to get underway!!!

Tips for Other Book Drive Organizers

We broke the fundraising into two parts: $300 for the shipping container to be raised (we hope) through online donations, and $200 to be raised locally to pay for our books to travel from CLE to NOLA.
