Books to Bind Hearts and Minds!

03/27/2014 to 06/02/2014
Los Angeles CA

The African Library Project brings gently used books to an African community that has lots of eager readers but very few books. Please help by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It only takes 1000 books and $500 to start a single library (and a little elbow grease!)

This book drive is organized by ...

Hello! I am a student at Cleveland High School and I believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to read! I am part of a youth group outside of school called BBYO. Here we bond and take part in leadership activities that will help the world we live in. I owe a mitzvah back to the community, and this wonderful non-profit will benefit thousands of people giving joy to a community in the country of Malawi. My wonderful friend Edgar has committed to help me with this amazing cause, so all of you can give him books and fundraising money as well! I hope that everyone can find it in their hearts to contribute to this amazing organization! The goal is to collect 1,000 books and $500 to be shipped off by June 2nd!

We want to start a library in Africa because...

38% of adult Africans are illiterate. To grow economically, politically and overall as a continent, Africans must have better access to schools and books. The lack of resources and educational tools is a huge problem in Africa, as most teachers are only able to teach their students what they remember from a book in class sizes sometimes ranging up to 400 kids! So I say that we can make a difference and give back to the world we live in. In the United States, there is plenty of access to school and books, as we rarely take time to realize how lucky we are to have this advantage and joy in our lives. With this being said, I'm sure everyone has orphaned books sitting around with no place to go, so make a difference and donate them to a library that is being started in Malawi where they will be cherished forever!

About our African Partners...

Mbombwe Primary School is our Library partner, and we are so excited to help expand the knowledge of those who live in Malawi.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

I am looking for books at U.S. pre-school to 4th grade reading level books to serve the primary school library sections, as most of the books need to be in the category. Also needed are U.S. pre-school to 8th grade reading level books which will go to serving the community library category.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

If you attend Cleveland High School, please drop off all of your books in D1 or E8 where you will see a designated basket. If not, email me at katherine.dorinson@corebaby.org and I will arrange a pick up that is convenient for you.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

I will be selling candy and other treats at school and doing bake sales likely after my end date (May 2). I will also be walking dogs and babysitting as every cent will go into shipping these books to Africa. If you have any questions please feel free to email me at katherine.dorinson@corebaby.org

Here are some ways that you can help...

Some simple ways you can help are donating books that are cluttering your home, donating money, buying candy and other baked goods or giving your time to help with this great cause.
