Ghana Reads!

01/07/2014 to 03/31/2014
San Francisco Bay Area CA

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

I am Carol, from San Francisco, and I am leading this drive. As a former English teacher and a lifelong avid reader. I am sending this library for a school in the town of Jacobu in the Ashanti region of Ghana with help from friends, colleagues, neighbors, book clubs and anyone in any of their networks who want to help!

We want to start a library in Africa because...

Reading is life and so important to learning, personal growth, imagination and creativity. If we can create a library for use by 200 students and their village, that could impact many, many more and have a powerful ripple effect on their lives and the lives of those around them. Libraries can help imagine and build dreams. Children reading can inspire their families and neighbors. Let's help them read-one village at a time,

About our African Partners...

We are starting a library for a school of 200 students-pre-school through 6th grade, in the HIA D/A primary and junior high school in Jacobu, in the Ashanti region of Ghana. The small village is on a dirt road, and most of the buildings are made of mud, but they have committed to having a library!

Please contribute these kinds of books...

Books for pre-K through 6th grade reading levels. Also, dictionaries, puzzles, and educational games. We need to put together a library of 1000 gently used books. As of February 20, we are well along, but need a final push! We have about 800 books, and $300 for shipping. So we just need 200 more books and $200 to make it to the finish line. Can you help?

Here's how you can contribute your books...

I will be happy to pick up books or have them picked up, in San Francisco or on the Peninsula. If you live/work elsewhere, let me know and I will find a way. If you have a school or workplace where we can put a box to collect gently used books, just let me know. Please email Carol at

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

We also need $500 to cover the cost of shipping our library to the African Library Project warehouse and then on to Ghana. Please contact Carol at, if you can contribute toward these costs. Also, cash contributions to buy used books are greatly appreciated. We still need about $200, as of February 20..

Here are some ways that you can help...

Mostly we need books-gently used. Hardback or paperback. Board books for little ones. Dictionaries. Cash contributions are great, as they can be used to buy books at library sales. Anyone willing to go to their town's library sale would be great! Help packing up the books at the end of March would be very much appreciated. I plan to do that in San Francisco.

Progress Report

Our Goal 1000 books $500 fundraising
Results so far
(updated: April 3,2014)
1072 books $500 fundraising

The headmaster of the school, the assistant head teacher, the PTA, and the teachers are committed to this library. They are providing a room for the library, tables and chairs, and the shelving for the books-a big commitment!

1072 books were shipped at the US Post Office in San Francisco TODAY, April 3. Most of them were hard cover, so the library will have a sturdy collection! Thanks to everyone who contributed books, time and funds!

Thanks to Joan for collecting almost 300 books to give this drive a huge positive kickoff! And for adding another 100. Thanks also to Nina in PAC Heights, and the wonderful librarian at Sherman Elementary! Thanks to my book club friends and Pharmachicks for the cash and books they contributed. You are all the best!

Tips for Other Book Drive Organizers

If you find books that don't work for your drive, someone else might be able to use them!
