African Library Project

The Bookworm Buddies from Amy Belle

01/15/2014 to 03/15/2014
Germantown WI

The African Library Project brings gently used books to an African community that has lots of eager readers but very few books. Please help by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It only takes 1000 books and $500 to start a single library (and a little elbow grease!)

This book drive is organized by ...

The Bookworm Buddies. We are an Elementary School Destination Imagination Team from Germantown, WI. There are four 5th graders and three 4th graders on our team. We chose the Project Outreach challenge because we wanted to help other people.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

We talked about a lot of different ways we could help people and starting a library in Africa was the one we all decided we wanted to do. We have a library at our school and a library in our city that we can get books from anytime. The kids in Africa don't have that. We want these kids have books to read and learn from like we do.

About our African Partners...

Our books will be going to the Kobro D/A Junior High School library in Ghana Africa. They have 248 students from primary to Junior High School.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

We are looking for the following books at a US preschool - 6th grade reading level:
• Baby board books
• Early Readers
• Picture books
• Chapter Books
• Encyclopedias (post 1990)
• Atlases (post 1990)
• Paperback dictionaries/picture dictionaries and thesauruses
• Paperback textbooks (English, math, geography & science)
and teacher resource books
In addition to books we are also looking for:
• Flash cards, educational games, and puzzles.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

Through February 15th, books will be collected at:
Amy Belle Elementary
3294 Willow Creek Rd.
Colgate, WI
Other drop off locations to be determined. Please contact us through our team manager at jstanisch@aol.com for more information.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

We need to approximately $600 for shipping the books to Ghana, Africa (the higher amount for shipping is because of the number of hardcover books we have already received). Please contact us through our team manager at jstanisch@aol.com to find out where to send a donation. Any extra money raised but not needed for shipping will be used to purchase additional books or donated directly to the African Library Project.

We are holding an African Book Safari event on February 21st at Amy Belle Elementary. There will be African games, live African music, activity stations and a few prizes for those that come dressed as their favorite book character or safari animal, someone who donates a chapter book and the person that comes closest to guessing the number of pages in a stack of books. Food and beverages will be available to purchase and there is free custard while supplies last.

We will be selling items from Bead for Life to raise money for shipping at the following places:

Amy Belle Elementary - February 21st at our African Book Safari
Amy Belle Elementary - February 27th at Dinner with the Arts
Germantown Public Library - Date to be determined
