Emerson Eagles--Share the Love Book Drive for Sierra Leone

01/27/2014 to 05/09/2014
Albuquerque NM

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

...students from Emerson Elementary school, the Emerson Eagles. Mrs. Stevens, our librarian, is heading the charge. She has a dream to visit and help Africa. The African Library project turns out to be a perfect step to accomplishing that dream. We are having a school wide book and donation collection. Mrs. Stevens is also partnering with other community organizations to help us succeed.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

…the book drive is an opportunity to become global citizens. We want to become good readers, too so we have a lot in common with children from Sierra Leone. The 3rd, 4th and 5th graders are creating presentations about one African country. What a wonderful way to expand our minds and help others at the same time. Sierra Leone is a beautiful country that is a model to the world of religious harmony--let's support them in this very practical way.

About our African Partners...

We will be working with RISE Network in Sierra Leone.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

Please send colorful and well written paperback books for elementary students from pre-school to 4th grade.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

Students can drop off books in the big red boxes located in Emerson ES hallways. Others can send books to 620 Georgia St. SE, Albuquerque, NM 87108, c/o Mrs. Stevens. We will have two book drives during the semester. Our slogan is "one book + one dollar = one African Library." Our first book drive is happening this week, Jan. 27-31. Then leading up to Valentines Day, we will start collecting donations. We are planning various sales in the future to supplement donations. We hope to have all the books and money ready by the end of April.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

More info about where to send checks coming soon.

Tips for Other Book Drive Organizers

Be ready to sort through books and have an alternative organization to accept books that are not in the best shape or don't fit the perimeters.
