Give the Gift of Reading

11/15/2013 to 04/15/2014
Birmingham AL

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

Dana Green. I am currently running a book drive to start a small library in Sierra Leone, Africa! With a concentration in youth and adolescent development I not only care about the welfare of children locally, but worldwide. I am currently a graduate student working full time so I need your help to make this goal possible!

We want to start a library in Africa because...

Reading is one of the best skills you can have in life. African reading levels are lower than US levels. With poor access to reading materials and learning to read in a second language, literacy tops out, even for teachers, at about the 8th grade U.S. level in the rural areas. Most of the libraries are in schools that barely have textbooks and do not have the funds to purchase books which are very expensive in Africa. I strive to change this, one book at a time.

About our African Partners...

Reading Initative Salone (RISE) Network is a network of organizations committed to the development of libraries and reading rooms in schools in Sierra Leone as a way of promoting literacy and a love for reading. The network was established in 2012 by a group of organizations that are committed to the promotion of quality education and literacy skills in Sierra Leone.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

The book drive will begin November 15, 2013. The books need to be sorted, boxed and shipped by May 15,2014 so the last day of the actual book drive is April 15,2014. If you would like to know where to donate books please contact me at dagreen4@crimson.ua.edu OR mail your books to

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

1,000 paperback books cost about $130 to ship, while 1,000 hardcover books can run up to $500.
However, please donate whichever books you have on hand! Because I am not sure of which books will be donated, I will make the general statement of $500 to cover my shipping costs.

Here are some ways that you can help...

PLEASE donate books to this book drive! You will be giving the best gift a child could ever receive. Although 1,000 books sounds intimidating, it is totally possible! Please spread the word about the book drive! I am more than willing to meet you to collect books
