Almaden Junior Girl Scout Troop 61372 African Library Project

01/01/2015 to 03/05/2015
SanJose CA

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

We are a Junior Girl Scout Troop located in the Almaden Valley of San Jose, CA. Our troop consists of ten active girls who love to make a difference, not only in their own neighborhood, but also in the world! We are so excited to be participating, for the second year, in the African Library Project.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

We want to start a library in Africa because we believe every child and adult in this world should have the opportunity to read and learn. When we collected and mailed out 1,000 books last year we just knew we had to participate again in this amazing project. Knowing that the books we collected and hand-packed into boxes was going to make a difference in so many lives had such an impact on all our lives.

About our African Partners...

We are collecting books for Mlidzini Primary School located in the Kingdom of Swaziland. We are the only book drive matched with this school and they are thrilled that we are helping them build a library.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

The school we are collecting books for is a primary school. They are in great need of books that are at U.S. pre-school to 4th grade reading level

The school has also requested (if possible),teacher resource materials such as books, lesson plans, posters and games aimed at improving teaching

Here's how you can contribute your books...

Please contact Mariann McGee at girlscouts@mcgeecan.org or Gabriela Guzman at gnguzman@yahoo.com. Our troop will be happy to pick up any contributions.

If your child attends Graystone Elementary are we currently holding a contest for the classroom that donates the most books. The class that wins will receive extra recess along with an ice cream sundae party! Please have your child turn in all books to their classroom teacher.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

In addition to collecting 1,000 books, we also need to raise $500 to pay for the shipping of the books to Africa.

We are working on putting together a fundraiser but will also gratefully accept any donations.

We have set up a GoFundMe site where you can go online and make a donation. The link is gofund.me/lix3zs

If you prefer to make a donation by check please email Mariann McGee at girlscouts@mcgeecan.org or Gabriela Guzman at gnguzman@yahoo.com and we would be happy to supply the information of where the checks can be mailed.

Here are some ways that you can help...

Any help would be greatly appreciated! You can contribute by donating books, donating money for shipping costs, and also by telling others about our project and asking if they have any books to donate. We would be more than happy to pick up any contributions in the Bay Area.
