Jared's Swaziland Book Drive

10/07/2013 to 03/01/2014
Westfield NJ

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

Hi, my name is Jared. I am a 7th grade student. I enjoy playing sports, attending school and playing with my friends. I am organizing this book drive with African Library Project as my Bar Mitzvah service project.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

I chose to start a library in Africa because I can't imagine what it would be like without knowing how to read. Starting a library in Africa would give many people a chance to learn how to read, get a better education and have more opportunity. If more children stay in school and become literate, it will help end the cycle of poverty.

About our African Partners...

I am collecting books for a primary school in Swaziland. Swaziland is a small, mostly rural country located in southern Africa, next to South Africa and Mozambique. The population is approximately 1.4 million people. 70% of the people live on less than a dollar a day. The literacy rate in Swaziland is 81.6% for adults. Learning English is important for students and their exams are in English. The government does not have the money to provide a lot of books and resources to schools along with study aids. The government does supply basic school supplies to primary schools but students must pay school fees and for a uniform making it difficult for children to attend school. Therefore, many of the children are still left without books and other materials. One of the main languages in Swaziland is English and Swaziland celebrated 40 years of independence in 2008 on September 6th. African Library Project has already started 223 libraries there. I really want to help their efforts.
