Eve's Book Drive for Lesotho

09/16/2013 to 12/03/2013
Winchester MA

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

My name is Eve. I am in 8th grade at the Acera School. I am gathering books for Lesotho as my Bat Mitzvah service project as I am passionate about literacy.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

Often, in an impoverished household, children will drop out of school at a young age to work. As a result, they never learn to read. Their illiteracy means that when they grow up, they can't get a good job that will support their family. Without that job, their children will go through the same ordeal.

Reading a book opens a door into another world. Having a thousand doors to explore is a good incentive to learn to read--and stay in school. If more children stay in school and become literate, it will help end the vicious cycle of poverty.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

I am starting a primary school library. Please donate paperback books at U.S. preschool to 4th grade reading level.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

There is a donation bin in the lobby of the Acera School. You can drop books there until December 3.

Also in the lobby is the Book-o-meter. The Book-o-meter will fill up as you donate more books. Let's see it overflow!

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

There is a cash donation box in the Acera School lobby.

There will also be at least one sale of books not suitable to send (hardback, etc.)

Here are some ways that you can help...

Please, DONATE BOOKS! Preschool-4th grade reading level paperbacks.

In addition to books, sending a library requires at least $500 shipping costs. Please donate! Current funding stands at exactly $40.50. Every cent counts!

Also, all of the books need to be packed. Save small to medium cardboard boxes, and bring them in. (Or donate your books already in boxes! This helps me get them home!)

I will be holding a book-packing party when the Book-o-meter reaches 500.

More than half way there! Thank you so much to everyone who donated!

Right now, we're well on the path to 1000 books, but we're still short on funds to actually get the books to Africa. Please donate!

Thank you to Evangeline for the books, funding and boxes!!

I'd like to thank the entire Acera School community for their support. All the excitement is really amazing!

In specifics, I'd like to thank Ms. Eva, Ms. Katie, Ms. Amy, and Ms. Christine for setting aside class time for me to talk about this project, and Sean, Laura, and Ms. Kate for letting me miss class to talk to the elementary school.

Tips for Other Book Drive Organizers

Tips for all book drives:

If you have a neighborhood get-together, use the opportunity to tell people about your book drive.

Tips for solo organizers:

If you're trying to collect books at school, make sure you tell parents as well as students. There may likely be an email list for this purpose.

Sorting books is much easier and more fun with another person. Find a sorting partner!
