African Library Project

Open Books...Open Hearts

07/23/2013 to 12/10/2013
Palo Alto CA

The African Library Project brings gently used books to an African community that has lots of eager readers but very few books. Please help by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It only takes 1000 books and $500 to start a single library (and a little elbow grease!)

This book drive is organized by ...

My name is Kate. I am a freshman in high school. My goal for the African Library Project is to inspire others to join in and do a book drive similar to mine. This is my first book drive on my own, and I am excited to see how much I can influence my community and the community of Lesotho, Africa.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

Ever since I heard of this fantastic organization, I wanted to do a book drive. I believe having books is important for all communities of the world since reading is a life changing experience for a child. Every child deserves to have access to a library. Also, after looking at this project, I realize how easy my community has it. There is a plentiful amount of books and libraries in Palo Alto, enough to give some away and share with the world because reading opens doors and makes life better.

About our African Partners...

I am partnering with a secondary school in Lesotho. When I have the name of the school and more specific information, I'll post it here.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

For a secondary school library: Books at U.S 4th grade to 8th grade reading level:

-Juvenile Literature
-Children's fiction & non-fiction
-Teacher resource books, Dictionaries, and Children's Encyclopedias
-Up-to-date atlases
-Thesauruses
-Textbooks
-Books with universal themes
-Inspiring story books
-Life skill lesson books
-Books about Africa and African-Americans
-Children's Science or Literary Magazines
-Brain teasers and Flash cards

Here's how you can contribute your books...

I will pick up books from your house or on your porch.
Or
You can drop books in the container at side door of my house.

Just email me at katedeandre@yahoo.com to let me know you have books to donate. Thank you!

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

After the books are collected locally, they are shipped to a distribution center in New Orleans, Louisiana, and then shipped to Lesotho. The total shipping costs are $500. Donations in any amount would help with this.

To make a tax-deductible donation towards shipping, you may either give cash or a check. Checks should be made out to ÔÇťAfrican Library Project."

Please write "For Open Books, Open Hearts" in the memo section of your check. All donations (books and money) are tax deductible.

Here are some ways that you can help...

You can help spread the library project throughout the community by telling others about it. You can also help me organize the books and pack them into boxes or make little cards/drawings/or even bookmarks to go inside the books. Just email me if you would like to help in any way.
