African Library Project

One Thousand Books to Botswana

07/01/2013 to 11/15/2013
Palo Alto CA

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

Barb, Natalie, and Emrys are mother, daughter, travelers, adventurers, and good friends. We're very excited about sharing our love of reading with children on the other side of the world by helping bring books to a new primary school library in Botswana. Please join us.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

Learning to read is empowering, and having access to books opens a child's mind to a world of possibilities. We feel fortunate to have grown up in a place with well-stocked libraries and schoolrooms. So many of us have books in our homes that we have enjoyed -- why not pass some of them on so that others may enjoy them and grow from them too? This is a wonderful way to make the world a better place!

About our African Partners...

Our partner is the Retlhatloleng Primary School in the town of Letlhakane in central Botswana. The school has about 750 students from pre-K to 4th grade.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

We need gently used books, pre-school to 4th-grade reading level. May we make a few suggestions:

- Children's picture books
- Easy readers and early chapter books
- Teachers' resource books for school libraries
- Children's dictionaries and thesauruses
- Encyclopedias less than 15 years old
- Paperback textbooks in math, English, geography, health, and science (up to 4th-grade reading level)
- Books with universal themes (friendship, animals, family, love)
- Accurate up-to-date atlases
- Books about Africa or African-Americans
- Educational children's science and literary magazines in good condition
- Brain teasers, flash cards, educational games, and puzzles

Here's how you can contribute your books...

We will be collecting books from July 1, 2013 to October 1, 2013. Please contact us for a drop-off location -- or one of us will be happy to pick up the books from you.

Or you can order online from our Amazon wish list, and they'll send directly to us.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

We are also raising $600 to ship the books to the library in Botswana. Contributions of any size are welcome. If we have more than enough money to ship books, we will buy books from our wish list to add to the package.
