Michael's African Library Project

04/26/2013 to 06/29/2013
Cuyahoga Falls OH

We are working with the African Library Project to provide books to eager readers in Africa who have very few books. Please help us by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It takes only 1000 books and $500 (plus a little elbow grease!) to start a single library and make a huge difference in children’s lives.

This book drive is organized by ...

Our friend Michael retired from UPS and joined the Peace Corps. He is now teaching English in Sierra Leone. Besides teaching his classes, he is getting chairs and shelves built for his school's library, getting a water well built in his town that will serve the whole community, and is working hard every day on many projects for the people in his small rural town. Michael asked his friends at home to do a book drive through the African Library Project so children in the Bo District of Sierra Leone will have library books available to them. Most children in rural areas have never owned a book; just imagine how a well-stocked library could change their lives! ...How could we say no? :)

We want to start a library in Africa because...

Sierra Leone suffered through an 11 year war and people in the rural areas live without electricity or running water. Many of the children walk for miles to get to school. Their economic futures are bleak, particularly since Africa has the highest percentage of illiteracy in the world. Books are the key to increasing literacy, and literacy is a route out of poverty. In view of their need, we feel compelled to help and hope that you will too!
