Two Girl Scout Troops want a library for Sierra Leone and Malawi

03/07/2013 to 06/07/2013
Madison WI

The African Library Project brings gently used books to an African community that has lots of eager readers but very few books. Please help by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It only takes 1000 books and $500 to start a single library (and a little elbow grease!)

This book drive is organized by ...

Our troops have girls from age five to nine. We go to schools on the east side of Madison. Our girls have made blankets for the Children's Hospital and made cards for those in need. A book drive is the perfect fit to help our girls realize that it's better to give than receive and that they can make a difference in the world.

We want to start a library in Africa because...

Our girls range from learning to read to fluently reading. They are so surprised that others in the world have no books or libraries in their schools. It makes them sad and they want to share what they have.

About our African Partners...

The books will go to a primary school in Bo, Sierra Leone. The books will also by used by adults in the surrounding villages. Sierra Leone iis on the western side of Africa. Roughly two thirds of the adult population is illiterate. A Civil War that ended in 2001 caused over 1300 schools to be destroyed. They have re-built many but still need help to re-build and they need books!

We are also doing a book drive for Malawi. This country is in southern Africa and is one of the poorest countries. Their HIV rates are high and their live expectancy has dropped.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

We are done collecting preK-8th grade gently used books. We also needed math, science and gardening books for the ten villages nearby that will also use the library. No college books, these are a bit higher level than we need.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

We no longer need books, thanks to all who have helped!

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

Please bring a check to the Emerson office made out to Girl Scouts.

Here are some ways that you can help...
