African Library Project

St. Mary's Catholic School's Book Drive

The African Library Project brings gently used books to an African community that has lots of eager readers but very few books. Please help by collecting and delivering gently used books or by raising money to help pay for shipping to Africa. It only takes 1000 books and $500 to start a single library (and a little elbow grease!)

We want to start a library in Africa because...

The students and teachers of SMCS love reading and want to give others the opportunity to have access to books. Helping other people is very important to us, and we are very excited to work together as a school to make a difference in the lives of African students.

About our African Partners...

We are collecting books to create a school library at Boti Roman Catholic Primary & Junior High School, which is located in the Eastern region of Ghana. This school serves about 600 students.

Please contribute these kinds of books...

We are building a primary school library, so we need books geared for students in grades PreK to 6. Please donate books that are in good condition so that they can be enjoyed by Ghanaian students for years to come. Paperback books are preferred since they are more economical to ship overseas.

Boti Roman Catholic Primary & Junior High School has specially requested dictionaries.

In addition to dictionaries, these types of books would work best:
-Children’s picture books
-Children’s non-fiction books
-Children's fiction books with universal themes
-Teacher's resource books
-Preschool board books
-Encyclopedias (less than 15 years old)
-Children’s encyclopedias/picture encyclopedias
-Children’s thesauruses
-Paperback textbooks in math, English, geography, health, and science at a PreK-6 grade level
-Accurate, up-to-date atlases
-Books about Africa or African-Americans
-Recent issues of educational children's science and literary magazines in good condition
-Flash cards, educational games, and puzzles

Books and materials like these will help build the best library for Boti Roman Catholic Primary & JH School. Any books we receive that will not meet the needs of our partner school will be donated to other charitable organizations that collect books.

Here's how you can contribute your books...

Please place any book donations in the bin located in the lobby of SMCS. We plan to accept contributions throughout Lent.

We need to raise funds for shipping the books...

It will cost at least $500 to ship the books to their new home. We will be holding two out-of-uniform days within our school community to raise money to help defray the cost of shipping to books to Africa. We also welcome any additional monetary contributions; please contact Sarah O'Callahan (socallahan@stmarymansschool.org) to arrange any additional donations.

Here are some ways that you can help...

Members of the SMCS community can:
-Go through your bookshelves and find books that you're ready to pass on to others in need
-Spread the word to family and friends to see if you can gather additional books to donate
-Contribute money for shipping by participating in the out-of-uniform days or making another donation
